Entry requirements
Result equivalent to 135 credits with at least 75 credits in health sciences or in medicine, humanities and social sciences with a scientific orientation in health sciences and verified knowledge of English corresponding to the course English 6 in the Swedish upper secondary school or equivalent.
Aim
The course aims to develop the student"s knowledge and understanding of health-related problems from a social science perspective as a basis for the study of health sciences.

- Health care in a socio-cultural context.
- Critical perspectives in health science.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- 1. Be able to explain and understand a social science perspective on health and disease.
- 2. Be able to explain and understand a social science perspective on health care.
- 3. Be able to explain and understand critical social science perspectives on health and health care.
- 4. Be able to explain and understand key issues in the social development and globalisation of health issues.
Competence and skills
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- 5. Be able to justify positions in relation to health-related phenomena from a societal perspective.
- 6. Be able to identify key issues within a social science perspective on health.
Judgement and approach
On completion of the course, students shall be able to:

- 8. Be able to critically evaluate and relate to both their own and society"s development of knowledge in health sciences.
Implementation
The course is online. The course content is introduced in themes and worked on individually and in groups via an online-learning platform. The course requires access to a computer and internet connection.
Examination – tests and forms
Assessment 1 (0,5 credits) Introduction to social perspectives on health
Written individual assignment focusing on a social perspective in health sciences. Intended learning outcome 6 is assessed. Grades of Pass and Fail are awarded.
Assessment 2 (1.5 credits) Health from a social perspective I
Written group discussion focusing on social science perspectives on health and health care. Intended learning outcomes 1-2 and 6-7 are assessed. Grades of Pass and Fail are awarded.
Assessment 3 (1.5 credits) Health from a social perspective II
Written group discussion focusing on critical and global social science perspectives on health and health care. Intended learning outcomes 3-4 and 6-7 are assessed. Grades of Pass and Fail are awarded.
Assessment 4 (4 credits) Analysis of a health-related phenomenon
Written individual take-home exam focusing on the analysis of a health-related phenomenon from a social science perspective. Intended learning outcomes 5-8 are assessed. Grades of Pass with credit, Pass and Fail are awarded.
Grades of Pass with credit, Pass and Fail are awarded. A grade of Pass for the course as a whole requires at least a grade of Pass in all the examinations. A grade of Pass with credit for the course as a whole furthermore requires a grade of Pass with credit in the examination corresponding to at least half of total course credits.

Revisions
Transitional rules
Students admitted under this syllabus are entitled to be assessed under it one (1) year after the syllabus has expired, i.e., has been replaced by a new syllabus or discontinued. A student who has not successfully completed a course with a passing grade one year after its syllabus has expired may, within a further two years and at the discretion of the examiner, be given the opportunity for re-assessment in accordance with a syllabus which can be deemed similar in content and where the summative assessment can be conducted without more than a marginal increase in resources expended. After these additional two years, the student may only obtain a certificate for completed examinations.
